New recylcing containers

Today our new recycling containers showed up. Now instead of two yellow tubs, we get a big blue can. This can is bigger than our garbage can. I like that. We usually don't fill our trash can, often filling it about half way each week. They also are now allowing us to put tub style containers into it.

I really like the new cans, but we also have to remember that recycling is the last step in being sustainable. First we have to reduce waste, then we have to reuse what we can. What is left, we then recycle. These cans will make recycling easier. Since we can co-mingle all the curb side recyclables, more people will recycle. Allowing us to recycle plastic tubs means less garbage and more recycling. But, before we toss everything into the recycling, lets see how much of it we can reuse. And before we buy it, lets look at being able to reduce the trash in the first place.

Over the next week or two (or however long it takes) we are going to take a look at reducing, reusing, and recycling. We will consider different ways to do this and provide an introduction. Over the summer I will be learning a lot of new techniques that I will share with you. Remember, I'm learning as I go. I know some, and want to know more. I hope you will join me on this journey and keep your mind open. The journey will be long and fun. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Come back tomorrow for the first installment of Reducing the waste.

Recycling the Recyclables

From time to time, When we first started recycling I asked my husband not to put certain items in the recycling bin because I want to use it for a craft or DIY project. Now he just rinses everything out and leaves it on the counter by the kitchen door for me to reuse or toss in our recycling bin. The method works for both of us.

Reuse

I think it is great that some of the items get reused! Keeping them aside is a great way to do this. I will be writing up an article on various crafts you can do with materials that you would otherwise go into the trash. If you have written up some crafts on your blog, let me know and I'll link to them in the article. I'll also be checking out some blogs for such articles to include.
